BMW Shows Off Hybrid 5 Series In Geneva

by BMW in the News on March 1, 2010

There’s been plenty of buzz lately from BMW surrounding their new fuel-efficient powertrains and hybrid technologies, and that buzz only appears to continue as BMW plans to unveil the 5 Series ActiveHybrid concept this week at the Geneva Motor Show.

Based closely on the latest 5 Series sedan, the new Concept 5-Series ActiveHybrid features a straight six cylinder gasoline engine that produces 300 horsepower with help from BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine is also mated to an eight speed automatic transmission and cuts the emissions of the standard 5 Series by over 10 percent.

In addition to its ability to run entirely on electric power in some driving conditions, the BMW Concept 5-Series ActiveHybrid also features an Auto Start Stop function that can turn off the combustion engine when the vehicle is stopped briefly.

Although this vehicle is technically a concept vehicle, it’s likely to become a reality as all automakers, and premium ones in particularly, are becoming increasingly focused on fleet-wide fuel economy.
