With the recent launch of the all-new 2011 5 Series, it was only a matter of time before we began seeing spy shots and video of the next-generation M5 sedan. Luckily, that time is now.

One such 2010 BMW M5 prototype was recently spotted taking on Germany’s Nurburgring. In addition to photos of the vehicle during high speed testing, video of the new M5 was also captured as it drove around the area immediately outside of the legendary race track.

Powering the 2012 M5 is likely a 4.4-liter twin-scroll V8 engine; the same unit found within the X6 M and X5 M. Power rating is also expected to be in the neighborhood of 578 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque.

The Cadillac CTS-V go from 0-62 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Let’s hope the new M5 can top that when it finally arrives.
